All Schools Carnival 2008 Great Success
The 2008 All schools carnival was a terrific success from the refereeing point of view. Approx 90 referees from all over NSW, and one visitor from Victoria performed exceptionally well over the 3 day event. Final appointments read on.....

Yellow Vests Approved for All New Referees 09
At a recent meeting of the NSWRL Board a decision was made that all new referees will wear the "Yellow Vests" in training program, in their first 6 weeks of controlling matches.

Penrith Juniors Target Ex Players as Refs
Recently the Penrith Junior League in conjunction with the NSWRL Referees Unit, sent out letters to all players who did not register in season 2008. A special course was put on just for the respondents, it was very succesful.

Holiday Course set for 9th October at Penrith
The highly successful Holiday Refs Program continues on October 9, 2008 at CUA Stadium, Penrith. NRL Ref for A Day Program A Great Success
A pilot program kicked off by Steve Clark of the NRL referees, in conjunction with NSWRLRA saw young referees attend NRL Referees training for a day. The program was very successful and will be expanded in season 09 to include all Affiliated Districts of the NSWRLRA as well as Country area's.

Young Refs Do Well at Primary Nationals C'ships
Wests Referee Chris O Brien and Parr's Jake Peters McDonald recently went to Darwin for the National PSSA Exchange (NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR PRIMARY). The Championships were won by Queensland over NSW, referees came also from all over Australia including NSW Country.

Mick Otter Notches up 500 games in Uni Cup Comp
Last month at Leichhardt Oval Mick Otter notched up 500 gmes in the Sydney University Cup Competition. Micj joined the association in 1975 and 33 years later is still going strong.

Congratulations to Mitchell Stone from the Parramatta District who has been representing NSWRLRA at the National Under 15's titles at Brisbane. Mitchell has been given the honor of refereeing the final. Between Qld and NSW CHS.

For the first time in history of games between NSW and Qld Womens Rugby League teams an all girl officiating team controlled the match.

Mitchell Stone Wins Mick Ryan Medal
Congratulations to Mitchell Stone from the Parramatta Referees Asociation on winning the inaugural Mick Ryan Medal. The night went extremely well with 80 persons at the Presentation which also doubled as a fundraisng event for the Charity "Kids Express" Well done to the team leaders who assisted putting it together, the Board of teh NSWRLRA as well as the Coaches. Approx $3,000 was raised on the night.

Five referee associations took part on the Inter District Referees Exchange on the weekend of 17th May 2008, those included Parramatta, Wests, Canterbury, Saints and Cronulla co ordinated by Glen Jackson.

Interchange Officials Changes for 2008 season
The NSWRL has implemented changes for Interchange Officials for the NSW VB Cup and Jim Beam Cup for season. Simply put the officials this year have been selected to try and keep as much as possible younger refs refereeing in their Districts and gaining valuable experience on the field.

Presidents and Secretaries Meeting A Success
On the 10th April a meeting of all NSWRLRA affiliated associatons Presidents and Secretaries met at the NSW Leagues Club. A number of inportant issues were discussed including development, interdistrict trials, exchanges, recruitment amongst other things. Chairman Dennis Spagarino and Affiliate Liaison officer Glen Jackson were very pleased with the attendance and interaction, Steve Clark was the special guest speaking about the NRL Cadetship.

Refs Holiday Course Fantastic Results
The holiday course at Narrabeen on 23rd April produced apotential 20 new referees for local asociations as well as staff members of various leagues and another 6 finished their course to join the Manly referees.

Shayne Hayne New Refs Director at Central Coast
Shayne Hayne from the NRL Referees was recently appointed the new Referees Director for the Cental Coast region, appointed by the local CRL Division General Manger Scott Wyatt. Shayne brings with him a swag of expereience and all referees in the District will Benefit. An unbelieveable 42 new referees are currently going through their paces to receive accreditation on the coast.

Congrats NSWRLRA 100 today, Big Bash at SCG.
Today the NSWRL Referees Association turns exactly 100 years old, to the day from its first meeting on `13th March 1908. A big night is ready to kick off at 6pm at the members Bar Long Room of the SCG. Over 200 referees and Rugby League Officials will help celebrate this historic event with a re enactment of the first ever meeting.

Level 2 Coach the Coach at Narrabeen
The second Level 2 Coach the Coach course for 2008 run by the ARLRA was held over the weekend of 22-24 February at the Narrabeen Academy. Under the control of David Jay, 14 participants, covering areas from NSW Country, Northern Territory, Sydney and the NRL really enjoyed the experience. Over 3 days the class covered One on One coaching of referees, Communications, Critiquing the Critics, Negoiation and Counselling Skills, Key Indicators and Presentation Skills to name a few topics. A Level 1 will be held in March from 7 to 9th again at the Academy.

The new 2008 Junior Rep season starts with a new assessment evaluation process. The Advisory board has been replaced with Match Day Assessors by the NSWRL Referees Association to go in some line, with how the NRL referees are assessed.

Shoulder Charge Outlawed by NSWRL Up to U18's.
The NSWRL today at it's board meeting has outlawed the use of Shoulder Charge's in 2008 and beyond up to and including Under 18's. The new law will be in effect for all competitions, including Junior Leagues, NSWRL Junior Rep Competition, school competitions. This is a great move to improve the safety of players and retention. The NZRL did so a number of years ago.

Women Referees On the Rise
With 14 referees associations affiliated with the NSWRL Referees Association, female referees are growing in number. Covering Sydney Metro, Canberra, Central Coast, Newcastle and the Illawarra there are 40 referees plying their trade every weekend.
